What is Yin? Yin is feminine, receptive energy. Yang is masculine energy, and it is accessed through muscles and movement. Yin is found in tissues, facia, and all the between and allowing. Yin yoga is practicing rest. We are so thrown into a hustle-and-grind culture, urged to move everything to make things happen. We balance all that effort by resting. This practice also reminds us that we cannot control or force external change, but we can allow our energy to flow, allow releases of unnecessary physical/emotional stresses and tension, and allow change from within.
It is said we keep our issues in our tissues ~ and we can’t force healing. Knowing this, a yin practice is essentially a practice of not taking control. It’s more challenging than you might think, to watch the breath without changing it, and allow sensations to just move through us without getting distracted by physical or mental fidgeting.
Poses are held gently in supported positions sequenced for less overall movement. Natural breath settles in each pose over several minutes. This practice settles throughout cold soft tissues and releases blockages, creating sensations of warmth and relaxation as energy is able to flow more freely.
